A British pianist’s experimental album Quantum Harmonies merges jazz improvisation with principles from quantum physics, featuring tracks that “mutate” in real-time based on listener biometrics. The project, developed with Cambridge University researchers, uses AI to adapt harmonies to heart rate data from wearable devices, creating a personalized listening experience.
The album’s standout track Superposition—which shifts between blues and free jazz depending on the listener’s stress levels—debuted at number one on experimental charts. The artist’s live shows incorporate holographic projections of particle collisions, blurring science and art. “Jazz has always been about uncertainty,” they explained. “Quantum physics just gave us new scales to explore.” The project inspired MIT’s Media Lab to develop music-based mental health therapies.
